On December 1, 2004, the law firm of Stein, McEwen & Bui LLP was officially opened and represents one of the newest full service intellectual property boutiques in the Washington DC area. The firm includes eight attorneys, all with significant intellectual property experience and all registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office in order to secure the intellectual property needs of its clients.
Michael D. Stein, Partner, formerly a Partner in the law firm of Staas & Halsey LLP, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1987, and a Juris Doctor degree from the American University in 1992. Mr. Stein has been actively involved in the preparation and prosecution of U.S. patent applications in many different areas of technology with particular emphasis upon consumer electronics (particularly optical storage media, televisions, audio devices, monitors), computer hardware and software, printers, networking, telecommunications, semiconductors, and robotics. In addition, Mr. Stein has been actively involved in the preparation of validity and infringement opinions, trademark oppositions, and preparation and prosecution of U.S. trademark applications, as well as counseling clients extensively in regard to other intellectual property matters. Mr. Stein has also been involved in Internet trademark disputes.
James G. McEwen, Partner, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas in 1993, and J.D. with honors from George Washington University National Law Center in 1996, where he was a staff member of the Public Contract Law Journal. Mr. McEwen is admitted to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the District of Columbia, and is registered to practice law before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Mr. McEwen has prepared and prosecuted patent applications in computer hardware and software, control systems, mechanical and optical devices, semiconductor manufacturing and manufacturing equipment, battery and battery manufacturing methods, data encoding and decoding methods and devices, and display device technologies. In addition, Mr. McEwen has prepared and been involved in patent validity and infringement opinions, reissue and reexamination proceedings, intellectual property licensing and settlement negotiations, intellectual property licensing with elements of the Federal government, trademark prosecution, domain name disputes, trade secret protection, and provided litigation support in patent infringement claims.
Hung H. Bui, Partner, was previously a Partner at the law firm of Antonelli, Terry, Stout & Kraus, LLP in Arlington, Virginia. Mr. Bui received his B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering with minors in International Area Studies from Drexel University in 1990, and his J.D degree from the Washington College of Law, American University, in 1994. Mr. Bui also attended Franklin Pierce Law Center on scholarship where he studied advanced patent and trademark practices and transactions, and served as a Patent Examiner in the computer group of the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
In private practice since 1991, Mr. Bui has provided, to both domestic and international clients, a broad range of intellectual property services, including matters of patent validity, enforceability, product clearance, infringement opinions, offensive and defensive patent strategies, licensing of patented technologies and portfolio management, as well as all aspects of patent preparation, prosecution, interference and appeals before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
The associates joining the firm on December 1, 2004 include John H. Stowe, who received a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1964 and his J.D. degree from Indiana University-Indianapolis Law School in 1971; Thomas L. Jones, a graduate of Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, with a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering, and his J.D. degree from the Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon; Howard Levy, who received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Duke University School of Engineering in 1998, and a J.D. degree from the Temple University School of Law in 2001;
Steven Crabb, who received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, cum laude, from the University of South Alabama in 1993, and a J.D. degree with Honors from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1998; and Douglas X. Rodriguez, who received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1996, and a J.D. degree from Washington College of Law, The American University in 2002.
